What we collect, and where it goes

When you request an estimate

The request form on a category page or a pro’s page collects your first and last name, city, phone number, and what you need done. A street address and an email address are optional; you may also say how urgent the job is and when you can be reached.

It goes to the pros you tick, and to nobody else. That is the point of the form — you are asking those businesses for an estimate. One record is stored for each pro you selected, so each of them is a separate request rather than a shared list.

We do not sell these requests, and we do not send them to pros you did not select. Ticking three pros means three businesses; it does not mean the category.

When you send us a message

The contact form collects your name, a phone number or an email address, your message, and — depending on whether you are a homeowner or a home service pro — your ZIP, or your business name, business ZIP, trade and license number.

A message to us reaches us only. It is not shown to any pro and it is not a lead. If you want estimates, the request form is the one that reaches pros.

When a pro subscribes

Payment is handled by a third-party payment processor; card details are entered there and are never sent to us or stored by us.

What is recorded while you read

We record how the directory is used — pages viewed and links followed — so we can tell pros how their listing performed.

We use two counters: our own, and Vercel Web Analytics. Both are served from this site and neither sets a cookie. There is no Google Analytics and no advertising pixel.

Vercel hosts this site and also counts page views on it. It records the page, the site you arrived from, the country and region, and the kind of browser and device — never a name, and never anything that follows you to another website. It sets no cookie: a visitor is recognised by a code worked out from the request itself, and that expires after 24 hours.

We never store your IP address. It is hashed the moment it arrives and the result cannot be turned back into an address. The third-party providers that host and store this site keep their own operational logs, under their own policies.

The site sets no cookies of its own. Signing in to the password-protected internal reports area sets one, and nothing else on the site does.

Things your browser fetches from elsewhere

Photographs on a pro’s page are served from that pro’s own website rather than copied onto ours — the picture is evidence that it came from them. That means your browser requests the image directly from their web host, and that host can see the request in the ordinary way any website sees a visitor.

Where a pro has a video, the thumbnail is loaded from YouTube. The video player itself is not loaded until you press play, and it uses YouTube’s no-cookie address. If you never press play, YouTube is never asked for it.

Who else handles it

We use third-party providers for hosting, data storage and payment processing. They act as service providers for us and handle information only to run the site.

Beyond them, and beyond the pros you choose on a request form, your information is not shared, and it is never sold.

How long we keep it, and how to have it removed

We keep records for as long as they are needed to run the directory.

To see what we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted, get in touch and say so. Requests are read and answered. Where a request has already gone to a pro, we can remove our copy; theirs is between you and them.

Children

This site is for people arranging work on a home. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this changes, the date on this page changes with it. We will not quietly broaden what we do with information already given to us.
